ChE/Ch 164 Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics

Prerequisite: Ch 21 abc or equivalent. An introduction to the fundamentals and simple applications of statistical thermodynamics. Foundation of statistical mechanics; derivation of various ensembles; statistical fluctuations; connection to thermodynamics; non-interacting quantum and classical gases; heat capacity of solids; adsorption; chemical equilibria; phase transitions; linear response theory; classical fluids; computer simulation methods.
